The Drop

European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot recently finished a busy mission. Over a span of less than 15 days, she stepped outside the International Space Station three different times. These trips outside the ship are called Extravehicular Activities, or EVAs. In total, she spent 19 hours and 42 minutes working in the vacuum of space. During these spacewalks, Sophie and her team focused on keeping the station in good shape. They swapped out old equipment for new hardware and installed a brand-new antenna to help the station communicate. They also spent time getting experiments ready for scientists to use later. Working in space is very difficult because there is no air and the temperatures change quickly. Sophie had to wear a special pressure suit to stay safe. By the time she finished her third spacewalk, she was leading the team as the main worker, known as EV1. Her work shows how important it is for astronauts to stay calm and follow their training when they are far above Earth.

Why It Matters

Keeping the space station running is vital because it serves as our only permanent home in orbit. By replacing old hardware and adding new antennas, astronauts ensure that the laboratory stays connected to Earth and can keep running science tests that help us understand how humans can live in space for a long time. These maintenance tasks are the main reason the station can keep functioning year after year.

The Catch

This report confirms the successful completion of specific maintenance tasks, but it does not provide details on the long-term scientific results of the experiments being prepared. The success here is measured by the completion of physical labor rather than the discovery of new physical phenomena.

Put That in Perspective

Spacewalks remain one of the most dangerous and demanding tasks for any astronaut. While modern crews have refined their techniques since the early days of station building, each EVA still requires perfect cooperation between the person outside and the ground team watching from inside the station.
