Twin Spacecraft Spot a Giant Magnetic Loop Hiding Around Mars

The Drop

Mars is a lonely because it does not have a giant magnetic field like Earth to protect it. Instead, it has small, patchy magnetic areas stuck in its crust. Recently, two robots named MAVEN and Tianwen-1 were flying in the right place at the right time. They both sensed a strange, invisible structure called a magnetic flux rope while passing through the air surrounding Mars. Think of this like a thick, twisted rubber band made of magnetic energy. Because both spacecraft were nearby, they could track the same event from slightly different angles. This helped scientists build a 3D picture of what was happening. It turns out the magnetic field lines were bent into a giant loop, with both ends anchored down into the surface of the . This structure looks surprisingly like the glowing loops of magnetic energy often seen bubbling up on the surface of our Sun.

Why It Matters

This discovery is important because it shows that Mars can make its own complex magnetic structures, even without a global shield. It proves that the ’s magnetic patches are more active and dynamic than we once thought. By watching how these loops form, scientists can better understand how magnetic energy moves through space and interacts with the atmospheres of s.

The Catch

While the data from both spacecraft is very strong, it is still just one event. Scientists are not yet 100% sure how these loops form. They might be created by the wind from the Sun pushing on the , or they could be caused by magnetic fields on the surface snapping and reconnecting like a rubber band breaking. More observations are needed to know which idea is correct.

Put That in Perspective

Scientists have studied magnetic loops on the Sun for a long time, but seeing a similar shape on Mars is a rare treat. It reminds us that even though planets are different, they often follow the same laws of physics. Researchers will now look through older data to see if these hidden loops have been caught on camera before without anyone noticing.
